How do menstrual cups work?

If you’re new to period cups, they may sound confusing! How on earth do they keep the blood in? Menstrual cups are flexible small cups that you push into your vagina and the sides create a seal that means any period blood and discharge is collected. The cup has a small stem that, much like a period string, helps you remove the cup. After 12 hours (this depends on your blood flow), you can remove the cup over a toilet and rinse it out.

How do you clean a period cup?

It is important before we discuss cleaning your menstrual cup that you know that certain soaps and fragranced soaps may cause irritation. You can purchase a range of cleaners designed specifically for menstrual cups, which will ensure you are cleaning them properly and reducing the risk of vaginal irritation.

These cups are super easy to clean and maintain! Hot water and soap are the perfect way to clean them during your period. If soap isn’t suitable, a vinegar solution (1:9) with water is a great way to sanitise your period cup. Rinse before you use again.

At the end of your period, we recommend boiling your period cup before your next cycle. After washing your cup, add it into a pot with boiling water for a few minutes! Easy!
